FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):How many students are accepted to the program each year? Typically, 4-5 students. Does the department accept students into the program without an advanced degree (M.A.) in Art History? Yes, the department accepts both students with and without advanced degrees. Those students admitted with an M.A. can usually waive a year of coursework. How long is the program and how is it structured? The PhD program is designed to take 5 to 6 years, depending on the student’s preparation. The course of study normally includes two years of coursework, a qualifying paper, doctoral examinations, and the dissertation. Students are also required to pass examinations demonstrating reading competence in two research languages. (Please see the description of the graduate program for further details.) Does the department offer a terminal M.A.? The program is designed with the PhD in mind. Students who do not complete the PhD receive a terminal M.A. What is the financial support offered by the department? The department offers all incoming students five years of tuition and stipend support. Selected candidates may be awarded Woodruff, Emory Graduate Enrichment, or an Arts & Sciences fellowship. Further funding is offered on a competitive basis in the form of the Dean’s Teaching Fellowship. The Center for Humanistic Inquiry also awards pre-doctoral grants. Is there funding available for summer research or other summer programs? Yes, the department offers discretionary funds in support of research based summer initiatives.
